Google Android: The First Open Source Mobile Platform

Google Android is the world’s first complete, free and open source mobile platform developed by no other than Google. It consists of the main operating system, middleware and key applications - all free and open. Applications use Java programming language which runs on Dalvik, a custom virtual machine designed for embedded use. The applications run on top of Linux kernel.

To see the Google Android in actual usage, watch this video:

Google Android is partnered with T-Mobile as its carrier and HTC as the hardware maker. The phone has an intuitive touch screen and QWERTY keyboard all packed in a portable phone. But as always, first generation devices are as buggy as they always are. To add to the excitement that I might have flooded on you, here is another image:

Keeping Up with Windows Registry

Windows Registry is a location in a operating system that stores settings and options of hardware and software components. In layman’s term, the registry is like a library of computer data. Mess with your registry and you mess with the operating system and might be doing a disk format eventually.

Registry errors might result from virus or malware infection or just plain curiosity. I have once done a wrong move of editing my computer’s registry and eventually came up with a freshly installed Windows XP.

Instead of doing the messing around yourself that might trash your system, it is always advisable to use software to assist in keeping your registry in place. Software like windows registry cleaner are easy to find when you search the Internet. Registry cleaners do the hard work and makes it safe to remove virus and trojans that are infecting the system. They also keep the registry in top shape and prevent unauthorized editing of the registry keys.

Uniblue is one of Microsoft Gold certified partners that provides safe registry cleaner that scans and analyzes your system for errors. Uniblue also offers free system scan for site visitors.

Always remember to keep your registry in top shape to help optimize your system’s performance.

PC Port Numbers

I am not going to talk about Math here, I barely passed my Math subject back in school. But being a system administrator, I have encounters with port numbers every day. And I admit, there are thousands of port numbers today, and how do you know which one is which?

In comes pc-library.com where every port like TCP Port 445 is defined and explained. With its extensive information about ports, system and network administrators like me can get information about port numbers. Knowledge of how a port is used can help provide a secure computing environment for everyone. A little security implemented a user can use a port safely without fear of being compromised.

Which Linux Distro is Best for You

There are a lot of times that I have been asked, and still being asked: Which Linux is the best? Or which Linux distribution is best for me?

I find it hard to answer the question since there are a lot of things that should be considered before getting your hands on a Linux installer. If I suggest a wrong distro, the user might get turned off, and shy away from using Linux. Among the things that should be considered is how ‘technically’ knowledgeable a user is. Some users tend to expect that Linux IS Windows and when they find out that it isn’t, they curse Linux.

Fortunately, there is a site that I find helpful to a situation like this. If you want to test yourself and see which Linux is best for you, visit www.zegeniestudios.net and take the Linux chooser test. After you answer the series of questions, you will be given suggestions of which Linux is best for you.

Linux Evolution

Found another great video of how Linux evolved these past years. Interestingly enough, the video compares the evolution of Windows and Linux. Personally, I like the Windows ‘oops’ videos :D

Anyway, watch the video and enjoy ;)

Find People with Your PC

Decades ago, finding people using your home computer is only possible in movies, television and at CERN. Maybe FBI can do it as well but today, everyone with access to a computer and Internet connection can make it possible to find people.

One website that offers very simple way to track friends and family is Search People directory (www.searchpeopledirectory.com). The website is very easy to use and pleasing to the eyes if you want to perform people search by address. The website clearly knows that websites should be simple and user-friendly and does not overwhelm the user with so much tabs and drop-downs that visitors are scared away and never to come back. Searching people only requires the last name but the search will be more precise if first name and the state are given as well.

I tried their services by searching for someone I know (name will not be mentioned) and the site amazingly found the person as well as the records. For a small fee, you can even expand the search and perform background check like credit reports, court records, criminal records and even find relatives.

This website is a great tool for companies who want to perform background checks on potential employees. People looking for friends and family members can also benefit from this website as the site can search for home address histories of people in their database.

Since the site requires payment to receive full information, potential identity theives might get discouraged because the payment also requires the some information from the user. This also helps deter stalkers and not risk of having someone get hold of your personal identification.

Ubuntu 9.04: Jaunty Jackalope

After the arrival of Intrepid Ibex in October, in six month’s time it will depart to give way for a new Ubuntu and fortunately, Arstechnica revealed that the next Ubuntu Codename will be Jaunty Jackalope.

ubuntu-904-jackalope

The codename Jaunty Jackalope was revealed by no other than Mark Shuttleworth himself and will be out in April, making it Ubuntu 9.04. According to Shuttleworth, Ubuntu is ready to compete with Desktop giants Windows and OS X and expects it to be shipped with millions of computers this coming year.

Improvements in the next version includes faster boot-up time and focused on general performance. Speed is the magic word and just like a Jaunty Jackalope, 9.04 aims to be lightning fast.

“The Warrior Rabbit is our talisman as we move into a year where we can reasonably expect Ubuntu to ship on several million devices, to consumers who can reasonably expect the software experience to be comparable to those of the traditional big OSV’s—Microsoft and Apple. The bar is set very high, and we have been given the opportunity to leap over it. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to shine, and we want to make sure that the very best thinking across the whole open source ecosystem is reflected in Ubuntu, because many people will judge free software as a whole by what we do.” -Mark Shuttleworth

Google Chrome: Fresh Take on Browser

The Battle of the Browsers will revive again as the new contender joins in. If you think that we have enough Internet browsers as it is, think again. Google is not going to let Mozilla and Microsoft take all the glory for themselves.

Google Chrome is ready to be released from Google’s arsenal of fast apps on September 2, 2008. This new browser from Google is designed to be fast, simple and clean, just like the Google Homepage. The philosophy behind the development of this new browser is to make things clean and simple, take away all the unnecessary stuff and let the user do the important stuff like browsing, chatting and sending emails. Google Chrome gets out of the way so you can surf the Internet or write those emails. Most of the components in Chrome is from Mozilla Firefox and Apple Webkit, but will remain open-source, and participation from community to help build this new browser is encouraged.

From Chrome’s official blog:

Under the hood, we were able to build the foundation of a browser that runs today’s complex web applications much better. By keeping each tab in an isolated “sandbox”, we were able to prevent one tab from crashing another and provide improved protection from rogue sites. We improved speed and responsiveness across the board. We also built a more powerful JavaScript engine, V8, to power the next generation of web applications that aren’t even possible in today’s browsers.

Google also takes the road less traveled in introducing their new app - this time they have used comics in introducing their new open-source browser. Not very typical way of introducing a new app but indeed very unique. The comics about Google Chrome can be found here.

For now, Google Chrome is available only for Windows but time will only tell when there is going to be a version for Linux, which I am willing to wait patiently. As for the number of choices that we have for browsers, all I can say is we can’t have too many browsers. Tell that to web developers as they have another browser to test their sites on. :D

Author’s Note:

I will update this post once the browser is released. I will also include the link to the download site as well.
