Ohnoes! My Christmas Wishlist!

Okay, for the first time in my life, I am going to create a list of what I want for Christmas. I have never created one, and I am not so very good at asking people for anything either. When someone asks me what I want for Christmas, I always tell them “kahit ano” (means “anything” in English). Here goes my list what I want to see in my Christmas stocking:

15. Harry Potter Book Set (Books 1-7)
14. Pancake House’s Spaghetti and Steak Recipe
13. Tabi socks
12. RHCE stuff (shirt, jacket, sticker, mug or whatever)
11. Someone who wants to do my laundry for a day
10. One freezer full of Nestle Yogurt Ice Cream (Strawberry, please!)
9. Starbucks Mug and Tumbler, one for each
8. One sack of kittie litter for my obnoxious cat who always pee on the door
7. Someone who wants to pay my water bill for December at his/her own expense (I forgot to pay my water bill )
6. A penguin plush doll
5. Naruto and Naruto Shippuuden Manga Set (not necessarily translated to English)
4. A dinner date with an American boss from my workplace (no hints!)
3. One month pass in any Fitness First gym within Metro Manila
2. Nikon D60 camera, with or without extra accessories
1. Tickets for a one-week trip for 2 to any Disneyland Park

There you go. It’s not a very long list but it is what I conjure up for now. Maybe I’ll add more.

Lights Out

It is never easy to not to have a portable source of light when you need it most. Last night, electricity went off at my apartment because of a faulty circuit breaker. Of course I panicked, I did not have any flashlight or candle at all. And I have no idea how to fix the thing! So I have to use my celphone as source of light to guide my way inside the apartment. How I wish I have invested in a reliable flashlight. I could have saved my knee from bumping into that darn bed.

iPhone Stumped Carrie Bradshaw

I just watched Sex and the City - The Movie in the theater with a couple of girlfriends and boy, it was great! It was worth every penny and I’m glad I decided to watch in on the big screen rather than waiting for Netflix to release it.

(What you are about to read may contain spoilers. You have been warned.)

What really amused me while watching it is there was a scene in the movie when Samantha (played by Kim Catrall) hands her phone to Carrie (played by Sarah Jessica Parker). When Carrie saw the phone, which is actually an iPhone because of its so familiar screen and shiny black case, she said, “I don’t know how to use this.”.

Carrie does not know how to use the iPhone! But then again, if you are not interested in high-tech gadgets like Carrie, you wouldn’t want to get near an iPhone. Carrie wants a simple, no-nonsense gadgets and I just noticed that she dislikes anything that was produced by Apple Computers.

There was an episode where Aidan gave Carrie a MacBook as a replacement for her black laptop and she hated it. Now she was handed an iPhone and she doesn’t want it. What’s with Macs and Carrie?

Pingu the Penguin

Linux is represented by a free-spirited, albeit flightless birds that can survive even under the harshest weather condition. A perfect symbol for the freedom-loving OSS developers, advocates and users.

I also have my own reason why I love penguins. Penguins themselves are contradictory by nature. Birds are commonly able to fly, a distinctive quality of their class in our ecosystem. But penguins are considered flightless birds - birds that do not fly, but instead spend more time in water and some cases, on ice.

I have my fair share of penguin related collections which range from plushies, mugs, toys, etc. But that is for another post. I also love the famous silent animation called Pingu, led by a penguin named Pingu. Pingu is a cartoon made for children by a Swiss named Otmar Gutman. Though Pingu is made from Switzerland, it is famous all around the world because of its lack of dialogue. Pingu characters use a language of their own called Penguinese, which is just plain Penguin sounds.

I love Pingu and I don’t see any reason why I shouldn’t be. Here is a short vid of an episode called ‘Pingu Goes Fishing’.

Today is my First Amortization

Ok, I am not going to rant on how my day was so miserable. Instead, I am going to talk about my chattel mortgage. But let’s get the definitions before we get going. Mortgages basically means using property as security for the performance of an obligation, usually the payment of a debt. Chattel mortgage is somewhat more precise type of mortgage which is defined wherein the purchaser borrows funds for the purchase of movable personal property (the chattel) from the lender. The lender then secures the loan with a mortgage over the chattel. Legal ownership of the chattel is transferred to purchaser at the time of purchase, and the mortgage is removed once the loan has been repaid. Get it? Got it? Good.

Now, we are talking about chattel mortage because apparently, there was a mistake with my car loan. I got my ride under a chattel mortgage contract with a local bank. However, my car was suppossed to be under a 36-month term but instead, they filed it under 48-month term, which basically means I have to wait a year longer to be able to really “own” my car. I have no problems with that, but we all know that car value goes down really fast and if I were to sell my car, I should to do it early if I want to get higher resale value. I have to talk to my account executive about this since we are talking pretty huge sum of money here. I do wish that the bank can accomodate me since clearly there was a miscommunication somewhere between me, my car sales executive and the bank.

Mortgages are great help in acquiring property like houses and cars. But like any other loans, one should be careful and study their finances thoroughly before signing any contract.

Why Should We Take Trainings?

For the past few days, I have been thinking of enrolling myself to one of the available trainings for Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) courses in Manila. Of course knowing myself, it would take me at least six months decide whether I should go with the training or not. I am also thinking if I am truly prepared for this kind of training, physically, mentally and financially.There are also a few types of trainings that can enhance our life not only with our careers but also on a personal side. There are technical trainings, management trainings, personality trainings (good for aspiring models or spokespeople) and more.

Certifications from prestigious enterprise companies like Red Hat Enterprise or CISCO is definitely a plus to anyone’s profile, providing bigger chances of getting that dream career. But, if totally unprepared, trainings and examinations can break your self-esteem, not to mention your bank. CISCO trainings at Mapua Insitute of Technology can take at least a year and may cost around Php30,000 to complete the four modules. I have taken technical training myself these past few years. The first one I had was Linux System Administration at Meralco Foundation which has definitely paved the way for me to become a Linux System Administrator. The training was OK and the lessons we had back then was very basic and the cost is really cheap. I learned a lot of things during my Linux training and I still use the notebook with my ‘newbie’ notes in it.

The next one I had was PHP-MySQL training with same institution. It is also OK, as we started with very basic modules and went on to more challenging case studies. This was a hard for me because this was the time I had to skip school because my father is already very sick. Nonetheless, I finished the final case study just in time.

Now going back to RHCE training, there is no doubt that being an RHCE attracts employers like moths to light. But this one puts really hard pressure on me. Php22,000 for an examination is a huge money and failing is not an option unless I earn Php2M a year. I also need to undergo another type of technical training for my personal use: driving lessons . So time management is a big factor here.

In the end, it all boils down to one: training is a very good investment and though it may be costly at first, the rewards are definitely great.

Today is a great day indeed. I mean nothing beats a stomach full of yummy food, John Mayer’s Your Body Is A Wonderland in my ears, and an email from a from a dear friend whose name rarely pops in my mailbox. It feels great to receive a mail from someone who is not a millionaire in Nigeria looking for someone to share his wealth with Now since we are talking about my mailbox, I just found out today that PayPerPost has finally approved my application to be one of their bloggers (yay!) after being rejected after my first try of joining this prestigious community.
