Bayanihan Linux: True Blue Pinoy Linux

Author Rai    Category Linux, News     Tags

For those who have been living under the rocks for quite some time, Philippines have started developing its own flavor of Linux, the Bayanihan Linux. Bayanihan in Philippines is the innate and unique characteristic of Filipinos to help other bayanihan spiritpeople, best exemplified when an entire village helps move the nipa hut of a neighbor by carrying the entire house on their shoulders.
Started last 2001, Bayanihan Linux is engineered by the Advanced Science and Technology Institute of the Philippines (ASTI), with its goal to provide Filipinos with free desktop software that has a large database of supported hardware, fast and stable computing environment. With its continued development, Bayanihan has its stable version 4.0 ready for download from the ASTI website.

Bayanihan also has a server version, the latest of which is Bayanihan Linux Server 2006. Built from Centos, Bayanihan Linux Server provides fast, efficient and stable operating system for SME’s, schools or government offices who opt for a more dependable operating system that is free and open source and freedom from worries of BSA knocking on your office door demanding an explanation as to how you are related to Jack Sparrow :))

Now with the latest version, I am downloading version 4 of Bayanihan Desktop, to be installed in my laptop just to check if it is compatible with my Acer 5570 notebook as much as it is in desktops. Some of the Linux operating systems nowadays, though very compatible with desktops, are not so friendly when it comes to notebook, mostly because of the hardware compatibility.

To try Bayanihan Linux for yourself, the software is free to download at the ASTI website and give me a feedback of what you think of Bayanihan Linux :)

na-try mo na ba ‘to? i think, the first versions of these were redhat-based, but now they’ve switched to a debian-base architecture.

haven’t really tried using or even downloading it … i guess i’m fairly contented with my Ubuntu.

BTW, thanks regarding sa pag-recommend nung hosting, na-setup ko na rin sa wakas bago kong blog. LINK!

I think the reason why Bayanihan is not so well-known in the Philippines, compared to Ubuntu or Fedora, is Bayanihan is a little short when it comes to public awareness (I think). I am not so surprised not so many Filipinos have tried using, let alone downloaded, our very own Linux flavor.

NP sa hosting. Let’s pray they decide to stay ad-free for life! ;)

  • weeee August 9, 2009 at 9:41 pm

also, what the hell is this faggot tree, we have an ubuntu logo for post number 4, but post number 1 and 2 are mere variants, you mean to say ubuntu isn’t linux per se? tsk

Just found out this Linux based OS at Mozilla Asia Blog. Personally, Bayanihan 5 put a smile on my face. :D I mean, may mga Pinoy na gumawa nito and I’m very proud for them! Never pa ako naka try ng desktop/laptop with Linux OS (like Ubuntu and this) but I’ve made a request na with Ubuntu CD installer. Going to try Bayanihan 5 soon. Sadly, kulang lang B5 sa public awareness kaya bilang pa lang talaga nakakaalam with this.

good job guys. its a good thing Filipinos have created their own Distro. I wish these people would push more effort so that it could provide more efficient and less cost OS.

    Mabuhay!

@weeee: Check out the BL5 website and they have a Live CD Download. No need to install. The Filipinos are getting there! Of course, people prefer Winblows and Ubuntu because of mere familiarity, and promotion of G.I.L.A.S. and iSchools Projects which donates computers to public schools on the condition of using the above-mentioned OSes. However in the competition of the three, I’ll go for Bayanihan.

one thing: the BL Server is slow, took me more than 14hours to download it using hi-speed PLDT MyDSL. That would discourage users.

    And here’s the testing results:
Machine used Pentium II, 128MB RAM
    Bootup time:
    Windows XP – 1:23
    Bayanihan 5 – 4:38
Ubuntu – Aborted after 7hours (never booted because it’s too heavy!)
Pinoy Pup Linux Project – 2:05 including choosing of screen resolutions, keyboard and timezone.

    Suceptibility to common viruses/autorun scripts:
    Windows XP – yes
    BL5 – no
Ubuntu – no (when tested on new machines)
    PPL Proj. – no

User-friendly Connectivity to Common Wireless Broadbands:
Windows XP – yes, with installers (slows down the system)
    BL5 – yes
Ubuntu – yes for SmartBro’s ZTE only (when tested on new machines)
PPL Proj. – Yes, except Smartbro’s Longcheer Model

    Load Testing:
Windows XP – hangs after opening 6 programs with average load of 10MB
BL5 – hangs after opening 2 programs with average load of 10MB
Ubuntu – not tested (did not even start!)
PPL Proj – the 9th program was automatically closed after opening 8 programs with average load of 10MB.
