With so many *nix distributions that are available today, so many interesting names are tied to different Linux flavors. But have you ever wondered why they were named as such?
Software developers always come up with names for their programs which is catchy and easy to remember. Naming a project is not my cup of tea, as a matter of fact, I find it annoying. Not only you have to think of a name, but you also have to think why you chose that name. A catchy name and a story behind it is not an easy quest.
One example of an interesting Linux name is Ubuntu, which is obviously not an English word but rather an African word meaning ‘Humanity to others‘. A name given to a program which stands by its dedication to humanity through software freedom. The name Ubuntu is unique, and if you dig deeper into its history, you will find that it is not only a brainchild by accident, but a brainchild with a purpose.
There are more interesting distro names that you can read over at hehe2.net’s blog who lists a few more distros and their name meanings and it is worth checking out.
