Sex and Social Networking Sites

The Internet started from just being another way to send and receive messages and evolved into something better like getting information when you need it and get in touch with friends and relatives no matter where you are. Websites too has become more than just a personal static website. I remember my good old days when I used to make my personal page in Frontpage and upload it in a website using my 56Kbps dial-up modem. Now we have publishing tools like Wordpress that needs very little effort to setup. Getting in touch with friends has never been easier now that social networking sites are everywhere.

As a matter of fact, I am not really interested in social networking sites like Friendster. While I do believe that these kinds of sites really help people to stay in touch with friends and family with just a few clicks, I see them just like a cellphone – you use it and you put it away. I browse through these sites every once in a while just enough to read what people are up to and upload pictures but never have time to fix my what my personal page should look like or what music should I use.

I am so surprised why so many people spend so many hours just going through pages and pages of profiles, some even during school or office hours. It is like an addiction – you want to know people and people want to know you on a bigger scale. Some are even lucky to find love through these sites, while some use it to do harm. There is one report from the UK who is finds sex and slept with 50 men through Facebook group. Admittedly, the girl is merely satisfying here own desires when she created the group.

Though social networking sites are created with good intentions, there are those who use it as a way to get to their victims. We have heard and read so many news about crimes that have started in an online social event, like chat or email, and most of these involves murder and sexual abuse. Parents should be aware of their kids’ online behavior not spy on their friends but to protect them from potential attackers as there are already criminal cases that may have been linked with social networking sites. It is always better to be safe than sorry.
