Someone said, I forgot who, that it is man’s nature to destroy itself. Now PopSci.com features a photo gallery of the most wicked weapons of mass destruction man has ever made – and used against, well, itself.

A quick roundup of the list is:

1. The Atomic Bomb. Definitely the most terrifying weapon of all. Not only the explosion itself is enough to kill hundreds of people, but also the effects of radiation poisoning to those who were in the radius of the explosion. The mushroom cloud looks cool, though.

2. Project X-Ray. Who would have thought that bats carrying incendiary devices could be used as a weapon of mass destruction? A dental surgeon from WWII did. This ingenious strategy would have been effective against Japanese paper houses, only to be canceled because of too many complications.

3. MK-ULTRA. Mind controls the body, or so they say. So MK-ULTRA was created by the CIA, in an attempt to control the minds of subjects through mind-altering drugs like LSD.
